Our Finests' Faces / Arrests by Natalie Logan
I tried to simulate the "kettling" and imprisonment many experienced in Toronto during the G20 Protests. I surrounded the cell gallery with police portraits I took prior to my arrest outside of Hotel Novotel on Saturday June 27th, 2010. During the opening reception of my show I handcuffed audience members in cable-ties similar to the ones used by police. Along with shots of the handcuffed participants, I've included all of my photographs from the series that was up at Gallery 1313.

INSTALLATION & PERFORMANCE
FOR
AGAINST LIFE

Goddess of Landfill was an installation piece where I dug a hole, half buried myself in the earth and surrounded myself with human artifacts. I specifically chose to assemble trash that wasn’t biodegradable. I believe there is a spirit that arises from objects. We often pray to spirits when we are in need. In many pagan traditions there are deities that govern different domains, such as the home, water, fortunes etc. However, I don’t know of any deity that is suppose to protect us from landfill leeks, pollution and the perils of garbage. My art piece seeks to invent a modern deity or spirit for current problems that threat the environment. I sat in a hole I made, near the taintracks at College and Dundas, for three hours in the rain during the first Against Life show (an offshoot and decsendant of Extermination Music Night) in a pile of garbage I curated.

INSTALLATION & PERFORMANCE
FOR
OFF MODERN
APRIL 3rd 2010

My piece was performed at an event/concept called OFF MODERN which merged the after hours scene with gallery esthetic. The installation and performance aimed to challenge our culture’s notion that behaving like an animal is a degrading experience. I created an 8 x 8 ft frame covered with earth, plants and fur for my stage. The challenge I experienced as an artist was to maintain dignity and grace while taking on the persona of a creature. I wanted to explore why calling a person an animal has negative connotation. I also wanted to raise questions as to who the real "animal" is in a party where the majority of the audience was intoxicated.
